Niamh and I saw this rainbow on the way home from her gymnastics - we ran inside to show everyone and it turned out to be a spectacular one. You can see that there are actually two rainbows here, and after some research on the web we found out that that the lower rainbow is the primary rainbow and the upper rainbow is the secondary rainbow (if you look carefully you will see that the rainbow on top has the colours inverted), and is caused by the light from the sun reflecting twice in the raindrop. We also noticed that the light was much brighter under the primary rainbow, and again we found out that this is because there are many rays emerging at angles smaller than the
rainbow ray, but almost no light from the internal reflections at angles greater than this ray, so there is a lot of light within the bow, and very little beyond it. It really is wonderful how rainbows always point us towards God and increase our wonder of His amazing creation.
